Starz’s sampling of “Magic City” has attracted 2.5 million viewers, including 423,000 for the official series premiere Friday night.
That 423,000 figured represents two telecasts, at 10 and 11 p.m. Over the holiday weekend and several repeat telecasts, 965,000 viewers tuned in.
Pay cabler had begun offering sneaks of the skein beginning March 30 following the “Spartacus” finale. Show attracted 730,000 for the first episode immediately after “Spartacus” and on DVR. An additional 670,000 via the net’s On Demand service.
“Magic City” is a huge priority for Starz, which is producing the series. In a show of confidence, Starz topper Chris Albrecht gave a second-season renewal to the skein on March 20 — three weeks prior to the launch.
Drama, which is set in 1959 Miami, stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a hotel magnate and family man who leads a double life and is tangled up with the mob. Show was created by Mitch Glazer, who exec produces with Geyer Kosinski. Ensemble cast also includes Olga Kurylenko, Danny Huston and Steven Strait.
In comparison, Starz’s Kelsey Grammer starrer “Boss” opened to 660,000 viewers when it premiered in October, and drew slightly more than a million viewers over six episodes.
